RESUMO

The training of human resources for health (HRH) is a recurring concern. The Virtual Campus for Public Health (VCPH) - the educational platform of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) - seeks to improve access to public health education, emphasizing leadership training for teams that plan, implement, and evaluate policies and educational initiatives. The objective of this work is to present the results of a consultation with experts on the virtual course "Leadership for Educational Management in Health Organizations", as part of a PAHO/VCPH strategy to strengthen leadership capacities for educational management in the Americas.A qualitative action-research study was carried out using the Delphi method with two iterations of consultations (one virtual and one in person) with experts in educational management in health organizations. The results show the importance of eight dimensions of analysis: recipient profiles, competencies, approach and contents, activities, evaluation of and for learning, adaptability, implementation, and monitoring during and after the course. The participation of actors from different geopolitical spheres in the design and implementation of a regional educational initiative fosters adaptations in the context of its implementation and improves the likelihood it will be adopted. This course can play a strategic role as a catalyst in the formation and consolidation of an integrated network of organizations that strengthen educational leadership in the Americas. This study also highlights the value of the methodological strategy used to improve the quality of HRH training.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on medical education, with many institutions shifting to online learning to ensure the safety of students and staff. However, there has been a decline in in-person attendance at medical schools across the UK and worldwide following the relaxation of social distancing rules and the reinstation of in-person teaching. Importantly, this trend has been observed prior to the pandemic. While reflected within the literature, there is currently no systematic review describing these changes. We aim to find out how medical students' attendance is changing as documented within the literature and its impact on their educational outcomes. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This systematic review will follow the guidelines of the Centre of Research and Dissemination, Meta-analyses of Observational Studies in Epidemiology and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. We will search the major databases of Medline via Ovid, Embase via Ovid, Scopus, Web of Science, British Education Index via EBSCOhost and ERIC via EBSCOhost. Two reviewers will independently screen each paper and extract data, with a third reviewer for dispute resolution. All studies reporting on medical students from various universities, both graduate and undergraduate and describing changes in attendance and/or students' educational outcomes will be included. Risk of bias in individual studies will be assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and confidence in cumulative evidence will be evaluated using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation-Confidence in the Evidence from Reviews of Qualitative Research approach. A narrative synthesis of the findings from all included studies will be reported. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethical approval is not required for this systematic review of existing publicly available literature. We will subsequently aim to publish the results of this systematic review in a peer-reviewed journal.

The objective of this article is to know the perception of dental students about their learning process under the context of virtuality. For this purpose, a search was carried out for scientific articles, review articles and theses published from 2020 to 2023. The databases from which the studies were compiled were: Pubmed/MEDLINE, Scopus, SciELO, and Google Scholar. The opinions of the students were mostly positive. The positive aspects of virtuality were related to the flexibility of schedules, time savings and extra expenses; They also indicated that it turns out to be a didactic way of carrying out the theoretical subjects. On the other hand, the negative aspects were linked to clinical and laboratory subjects; they indicated that their learning process during the pandemic was deficient in these subjects. However, some studies have shown that virtuality is a good complementary alternative for preclinical students, because it prepares them to approach the patient with greater confidence and security. It can be concluded that virtuality is a good ally in learning dental education; some of the students encourage this modality to continue over time, especially in theoretical and preclinical courses. Virtuality can continue to be part of dental education in our country, but it also depends on the teaching strategies and methodologies that accompany it.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To continue education during the COVID-19 pandemic, we implemented a Virtual Education Platform (VEP) and Virtual Visiting Professorship (VVP) in March 2020 into our plastic surgery residency curriculum. This study investigated resident and guest speaker perceptions of the VEP since the start of the pandemic. METHODS: The VEP consists of weekly VVP lectures and usual conferences held over Zoom. In May 2020, residents and speakers completed surveys that assessed the perceptions of the VEP using a 5-point Likert scale and open-ended responses. In August 2021, residents also completed follow-up surveys. RESULTS: A total of 19 (100%) residents and 10 (100%) speakers responded to the 2020 surveys and 15 (88.2%) residents responded to the 2021 follow-up survey. Speakers represented nine academic institutions, one international. 74% of residents responded that they learned a lot or a great deal from the VVP. In 2021, 100% of residents agreed that virtual conferences should remain a core component in PRS residency education, even after social distancing requirements subside. The VVP lectures were mentioned as the most helpful lectures in both years. Easy accessibility without travel time was the most mentioned advantage of the VEP in both years, with significantly more residents citing this benefit in 2021 (p = 0.0076). The most reported disadvantage for residents was the lack of social interaction and community in both years, with significantly more residents in 2021 citing this as a disadvantage (p = 0.0307). Residents' attitudes also shifted such that significantly more residents liked and were satisfied with the VVP lectures from 2020 to 2021 (p = 0.04). CONCLUSION: Over a year into the COVID-19 pandemic, resident perceptions of a virtual education platform and virtual visiting professorship were very positive. The quick development, implementation, and high efficacy of these educational experiences underscore that learning is possible in alternative forms in unprecedented times.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic restructured the teaching methodology, replacing fase to face learning with virtual media. In human medicine and dentistry, it has been a challenge to adapt to the new teaching learning process by developing the subject of human and dental anatomy online. Objective: To determine the impact of virtual teaching learning in human and dental anatomy during the confinement by COVID-19. Materials and methods: The collection of studies was carried out in PubMed, Science Direct, Scielo and Google Scholar, using searche quations composed of standardized MeSH terms complemented by free terms. The development of the systematic review was carried out following the guidelinese stablished by PRISMA 2020. The Rayyan web application was used to discriminate the articles. Quality and risk of bias were determined usingt he NHLBI and QUADAS-2 tools. Results: 413 investigations were analyzed, leaving 7 for review. Superiority of negative impact was identified by online sessions; In addition, the implementation of digital platforms, accessibility to software and videos were the main resources used. Likewise, among the benefits, the accessibility to there cordings of the classes given, sesión suploaded in advance and the time for feedback are high lighted. However, the little experience of managing virtuality, limited access to the Internet, greaterease of entering distractions such as social networks, loss of interaction between teachers and classmates made the teaching learning process difficult. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Clinical Record (CR) writing is a fundamental skill for healthcare professionals, but the best e-learning methods for teaching it remain unstudied. Therefore, we investigated speech therapy students' differences in the quality production of CR at the placement and their experience after following asynchronous or synchronous e-learning courses. METHODS: A multi-method randomised controlled trial. Fifty speech therapist students were equally and randomly divided into two groups attending asynchronous or synchronous e-learning classes to learn how to write a CR. The quality of the CR was tested through an ad hoc checklist (score 0-32) and the groups' scores were compared. The assessors and the statistician were blinded to students' group assignment. Students' experience was assessed through semi-structured interviews analysed with a reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS: No score differences between the two groups were found (Cohen's d = 0.1; 95% Confidence Interval [-0.6; 0.7]). Four themes were generated: (1) 'Different Forms of Learning Interaction', as the synchronous group reported a positive experience with being fed back immediately by the lecturer, whereas the asynchronous group reported that pushing back the question time allows for reflecting more on the learning experience; (2) 'Different Ways to Manage the Time', as the synchronous group had to stick to the lecturer's schedule and the asynchronous group felt the possibility to manage its time; (3) 'To Be or Not To Be (Present)?' due to the different experiences of having (or not) the lecturer in front of them; (4) 'Inspiring Relationships With The Peers', where both groups preferred a peer-to-peer discussion instead of contacting the lecturer. DISCUSSION: Asynchronous and synchronous e-learning courses appeared equally effective in teaching CR writing. However, students perceive and experience these methods differently. The choice or blend of these methods should be based on students' needs and preferences, teacher input, as well as organisational requirements rather than solely on students' attended performance.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic reshaped the delivery of medical education, necessitating novel modes of instruction to facilitate distance learning. Online medical education resources provide opportunities for self-directed and asynchronous learning. GISIM is a free, open access educational website dedicated to gastroenterology (GI)/hepatology, which teaches pathophysiology and disease management, and supports clinical reasoning skill development through interactive, dynamic, case presentation-based journeys. AIMS: (1) To describe the creation of a mobile-optimized, GI/hepatology educational resource for medical trainees, and (2) to report on trainee feedback on completing and authoring GISIM cases. METHODS: GISIM was created on WordPress and modeled after NephSIM, an e-learning platform dedicated to Nephrology. Content was developed by internal medicine residents and GI/hepatology fellows and attendings. Cases are interactive, prompting users to select differential diagnoses and management plans, with immediate feedback provided on response. Self-reported user demographics and website feedback were collected with an embedded survey. A separate survey evaluated case authors' experiences. RESULTS: GISIM launched in February 2021 and received 12,184 website views and 2003 unique visitors between February 1 2021 and February 28 2022. New cases are disseminated bimonthly. Sixty-one user surveys were collected, with a majority completed by fellows (38%) and residents (26%). All users found the website easy to use and most reported enhanced understanding of case topic areas. Nine author surveys were collected. Authors reported significant learning on chosen topics and improved clinical knowledge through their participation. CONCLUSIONS: We developed a novel GI/hepatology case-based resource that enables distance learning and was perceived as a valuable educational tool by users and authors.

RESUMO

Background: Aging increases the vulnerability to diseases and environmental changes such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Telehealth and tele-education are vital to prevent the deleterious effects of prolonged confinement, and to train the community, and constantly rotating medical students and health professionals. Aim: To assess the perception and impact of an online course about healthy aging aimed at the community and health care professionals. Material and Methods: An open online one-day course to promote healthy aging was carried out. A cross-sectional online survey about the course was answered by 386 attendants and a knowledge test was applied to 114 people. Results: Seventy-five percent of respondents attended the course synchronously. Of these, 79% were women, 20% were older people and 53% were caregivers of an older person. All respondents acquired new knowledge and were willing to participate again. The frequency of interest about self-care is three times greater than about caring for another person, In an older person, the interest is 101 more times about self-care than caring for another person. Ninety five percent of respondents felt more active and 84% felt more accompanied. Conclusions: The course facilitated access to information on the promotion of active and healthy aging in the community with a favorable perception and a positive impact. The coverage for older people with a digital gap should be improved.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Delivering quality medical education is a hot topic. The current discussion essentially addresses content versus competencies. Extensive curricula and matrices, and traditional assessments are against go against the modern concepts of medical education. Remote education stimulated this discussion and brought the opportunity to review the academic load and assessment. REPORT: In January 2021, a pedagogic workshop of the Medicine course of Centro Universitário FMABC was held. It began with a lecture by a visiting professor and coordinator of the medical school accreditation system on remote activities during the pandemic. Next, the person responsible for the Progress Test made a history of the latest assessments, and a professor who is a member of the Accreditation Committee of the Medical Schools presented a summary of the main insufficient points of the last assessment. Afterward, the students presented the last internal evaluations. Finally, the matrices of the course, from the 1st to the 4th year, were presented and compared with those of three other medical schools, and each year coordinator prepared their suggestions for changes to the matrices. Lastly, students, professors, and the course coordination presented a report and proposals, encouraging the integration of the academic community, the reassessment of teaching plans, repetition of content, and recognition of matrices of each year, offering ideas and tools, to reflection on remote learning, and opportunities for change and improvement in teaching, and learning. CONCLUSION: The disciplines showed willingness for integrative activities, extension, and creation of elective disciplines, complementing failures caused by the Pandemic.

A discussão atual aborda essencialmente conteúdos versus competências.

Introduction: This study aimed to estimate the causal effect of face-to-face learning on student performance in anatomy, compared to online learning, by analysing examination marks under a causal structure. Methods: We specified a causal graph to indicate how the mode of learning affected student performance. We sampled purposively to obtain end-semester examination marks of undergraduate and postgraduate students who learned using face-to-face (pre-COVID, 2019) or online modes (post-COVID, 2020). The analysis was informed by the causal graph. Marks were compared using linear regression, and sensitivity analyses were conducted to assess if effects were robust to unmeasured confounding. Results: On average, face-to-face learning improved student performance in the end-semester examination in undergraduate students (gain of mean 8.3%, 95% CI 3.3 to 13.4%; E-value 2.77, lower limit of 95% CI 1.80) but lowered performance in postgraduate students (loss of 8.1%, 95% CI 3.6 to 12.6%; E-value 2.89, lower limit of 95% CI 1.88), compared to online learning. Discussion: Under the assumed causal graph, we found that compared to online learning, face-to-face learning improved student performance in the end-semester examination in undergraduate students, but worsened student performance in postgraduate students. These findings suggest that different modes of learning may suit different types of students. Importantly, this is the first attempt to estimate causal effects of the mode of learning on student performance under a causal structure. This approach makes our assumptions transparent, informs data analysis, and is recommended when using observational data to make causal inferences.
